To officially declare one of the three undergraduate majors within the Environmental Studied Program a student must complete the following steps:
1) Do you qualify?
Although the ES Program does not have a "pre-major" that must be completed before applying, students should have completed at least one of the lower-division ES courses (Env S 1, 2, or 3) and at least two additional lower-division course required as part of the Preparation for the Major. Exceptions for those who are currently enrolled in one of the above courses or for other extreme circumstances will be considered.
There is no minimum GPA requirement to declare the ES major. A student should just be in good academic standing (overall GPA of 2.0 or higher) at the time they submit the change of major forms.
Please note Freshman are discouraged from declaring or changing majors (including undeclared students) until they have completed a minimum of two quarters at UCSB (one quarter for Transfer students). Exceptions can be made for those who are trying to enroll in a course that requires a student to be declared in a major that requires such course(s) as a requirement (i.e. Chemistry 1A/AL).
2) Complete an ES Program Major Worksheet for the degree you wish to declare.
You will check all courses you have completed and circle those that you are currently enrolled in or taking. These forms are available for download as .pdfs from the Major Worksheets page or may be obtained from either the ES Academic or Peer advisor or the ES Program's Main office in Bren 4312.
3a) Complete the "Undergraduate Petition to Change Major, Emphasis, or College" form:
Obtain and complete the Undergraduate Petition for Change of Major, Emphasis or College. One may download a .pdf version by clicking here, find it on on the College of L&S Advising petition webpage, or pick up a copy from the College of L&S Advising Office in Cheadle Hall, the ES Program Main Office in Bren 4312, or the ES Peer or Academic Advisor's office in Bren 4313. Be sure to indicated which ES (B.A. or B.S.) of Hydrologic Sciences (one of three emphases) majors you wish to declare.
3b) For Double majors only: "Memo of Understanding for Double Majors" petition:
If you are declaring or adding a double major, you are required to also fill out an additional Memo of Understanding for Double Majors" petition. One may download a .pdf copy by clicking here, find it on on the College of L&S Advising petition webpage, or pick up a copy from the College of L&S Advising Office in Cheadle Hall, the ES Program Main Office in Bren 4312, or the ES Peer or Academic Advisor's office in Bren 4313.
4) Printout of your Course History
Can be obtained by going to GOLD, Click on "Academic History", then Click "Course History" - includes all test scores (AP & IB), UCSB, and transfer work accepted at UCSB.
5) Self Addressed Stamped Envelope:
Address a regular envelope with your current mailing address and a standard rate postage stamp. You will turn this in along with the above forms and it will then be used to mail back confirmation once your application has been processed.
6) Return all the required forms to the ES Program:
The above mentioned forms need to be returned the Environmental Studies Program Main office in Bren 4312 or to the ES Student Peer Advisors in Bren 4313. It will take approximately one week for the application to be processed and the change be reflected on GOLD.
NOTE: If you are going to go over 200 total units prior to earning your degree and will be at UCSB for longer than 4 years (started as a Freshman) or two years (Transfer Students), you will also need to fill out a Proposed Schedule of Graduation Petition (PSG).
On the form, you must:
- Explain why you need additional units and time at UCSB.
- Provide a quarter-by-quarter plan to fulfill your remaining requirements for graduation.
- Obtain the endorsement of the departmental advisor in your major(s) and minor (if you are pursuing one).

- Completed the appropriate Major Worksheet
- Change of Major Petition (plus Memo of Understanding for Double majors)
- Printout of your Course History
- Self Addressed Stamped Envelope
- PSG Petition (if going over 200 total units and 4 years at UCSB - two years for transfer students)
- Turn all forms in to the ES Program Main Office in Bren 4312
