Env S 190 is a one-unit, P/NP only, course with no perquisites. This is a required course for ES majors, but is open to all UCSB students. It may be taken up to three times for credit (i.e. you may take Env S 190 three different times for a total of three units). The purpose of the ES 190 series is to give attendees insight into current research and issues in the diverse intellectual fields that constitute environmental studies. The focus of this quarter's topic is on ÒEnvironmental Careers,Ó what they are, how to choose one, and what UCSB resources you may use to better prepare for life after graduation.

Course Requirements:  Registered students are expected to attend ALL lectures, complete two short essays that draw on your experience listening to the speakers, and one course assignment. See below:

Essay #1:  The first essay should describe your motivations in choosing your major, your long-term goals with regard to employment, and your plan for integrating your education with your life goals. This essay should not exceed four pages, double spaced, and should be clear and succinct. It is due at the beginning of class on October 10th.

Essay #2:  We expect that by the end of the quarter you will have gained insight into the career selection process and have a better idea on how you can position yourself in a manner that makes your success most likely.  The second essay should pick up the theme of your motivation and goals from the first assignment, but focus on how these have been sharpened by listening to the presentations. It should incorporate specific points made during the lectures and how they have influenced your thoughts.  This essay should be written following the last course lecture and not exceed 4 pages in length. It must be turned in by 4 pm, Monday, December 10th to the ES Office, 4312 Bren Hall.

Draft RŽsumŽ:  RŽsumŽs are critical documents containing a summary or listing of relevant job experience and education, usually for the purpose of securing a new job. Often the rŽsumŽ is the first item a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker, and therefore a large amount of importance is often ascribed to it.  As part of this course students are asked to use resources provided in class and found at UCSBÕs Career Services Office to prepare their own up to date rŽsumŽ and turn it in at the beginning of class on November 14th.

Respect the guest speakers:  they are taking time out of their schedule to share a special part of themselves with you. Please reciprocate by being polite. SHOW UP ON TIME FOR CLASS, turn off cell phones, and do not rustle papers, pack up early, or talk during lectures. We want this class to be interactive, so there will be five to ten minuets at the end of each lecture so students may engage the speaker(s) and ask questions regarding their presentation.
