Welcome to the Spring 2004 website for Env S 131: International
Environmental Law and Diplomacy. This course is a component of the
environmental law, policy, and dispute resolution curriculum which
I have developed at UCSB starting in 1971 when I was in my fourth
year of law practice and starting to specialize in public interest
enviroinmental law. I have been a member of the UCSB Environmental
Studies Program faculty every year since then, and I continue in
the practice of environmental law as a consultant to the Environmental
Defense Center, a public interest environmental law firm headquartered
in Santa Barbara which I founded in 1977.
It has been an enjoyable challenge to update and rearrange the
course readings and curriculum over the years and to work with a
succession of enjoyable and challenging students in the teaching
and learning process. I think the current course materials provide
an excellent basis for exploring and understanding both the most
basic foundations of and the most recent developments in international
environmental law and dislomacy, and I enthusiastically welcome
yet another bright group of undergraduate students to carefully
and critically consider and discuss them.
