Dr. Osborne has held fellowships from the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris, the Davis Center for Historical Studies at Princeton University, and the Center for the Humanities at Oregon State University. Since 1995 he has directed UCSB's group on the Humanities and the Environment funded by the UC Humanities Research Institute. Previous research topics have included the history of environmental and biological ideas in the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries; the history of zoos; the history of zoology; the history of natural history museums; the history of public health; the history of military medicine. His current research investigates the relationships between natural history, human medicine, and genetics; the history and sociology of European environmental movements; tropical diseases and the medicalization of colonized peoples and environments; science and imperialism in a global context.
