The goal of Environmental Studies at UCSB has always been to provide our students with the best possible opportunities to learn and develop. We have an outstanding faculty and staff; people who are talented, committed, and effective. We invite you to join us in pursuit of these goals.

Responsible stewardship of our environment will require leaders that understand and respect human values and goals, and the relationships between natural and human communities. We believe that managing natural resources in responsible ways will sustain both resources and the human enterprise. Today's critical issues like climate change, energy, water quality, ecosystem management and conservation, and human and environmental health are opportunities for the next generation of leaders to devise and implement solutions of global impact and enduring harmony.

Tomorrow's leaders must possess the scholarly background and intellectual skills necessary to understand complex environmental problems and formulate decisions that are environmentally sound. Our process is highly interdisciplinary, drawing upon the diversity of environmentally related departments and disciplines throughout UC Santa Barbara. The new environmental leaders will be strong scholars with practical problem-solving skills, using both traditional governmental tools and those of commerce. They will think critically across disciplines and forge innovative partnerships.

 William Freudenburg Academic Development Endowment

 This fund will enhance undergraduate environmental education, including field trips and classroom technology. It is named to honor Bill Freudenburg, who died in December 2010.  Bill was the model of an ES Professor; he held the Dehlsen Endowed Chair in Environmental Studies and was a world class scholar, committed to using his work to make the world a better place for all people. He recently published an important book: “Blowout in the Gulf.” He was also an inspiring and popular educator who taught among other classes ES 1 - our introductory class, to over 400 students each year.   

Schuyler Lecturer Fund

This fund was created to honor Environmental Studies Lecturer Emeritus Barry Schuyler, and through him to honor and support lecturers in the ES Program. Lecturers have long been a crucial component of our program. They bring a real-world, hands-on, experiential insight to complement the academic perspectives provided by our faculty.

The Schuyler Lecturer Fund has two primary goals:
1. Support our existing lecturers with resources for professional development and to enhance their classes.
2. Allow us to periodically invite individuals to teach classes (either special short courses or full quarter-length courses) that would provide unique opportunities for our students

Environmental Studies Education Development Fund

This is to directly support student activities and development. These resources will provide for ES internships, scholarships, and awards such as the McGinnes Environmental Law and Advocacy Scholarship and the Outstanding Senior Award, and would contribute toward student-organized environmentally-related workshops and conferences. 

Environmental Studies Program Unrestricted

Nothing can replace going into the field and getting your “hands dirty” for really learning about the environment. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then an experience is worth 1,000 pictures. For a student, spending time in the field is an opportunity to interact with, and get to know, faculty that can never be matched in the classroom.  It is vital for ES to be able to provide as many field trip opportunities as possible, and to make each as valuable as possible. Thus, we wish to develop a fund to support off-campus excursions.

Endowed Chairs

Endowed chairs allow us to recruit the best faculty in the world, people who are world-class scholars and skilled, dedicated teachers. We target interdisciplinary thinkers who will strengthen the campus as a whole.
