Celia Alario is a communications strategist, facilitator, coach, spokesperson trainer and educator. She takes one quarter off from her professional career each year to offer courses at UCSB, in the Environmental Studies Department and at the Bren School for Environmental Science and Management. During the rest of the year, she cavorts with grassroots change agents, artists, academics and journalists who share her love for social justice, planetary healing and culture shaping. In the last 25 years Alario has collaborated on groundbreaking media campaigns, provided one-on-one coaching for Communications Directors and staffers, trained hundreds in public speaking and spokesperson skills and placed thousands of stories about critical social justice and environmental issues in media outlets worldwide.
Alario has recently provided spokesperson training for the Women and Gender Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), staff of The Kindle Project, Earthworks and Amazon Watch, and coached communications staffers at Earthworks, Solar Mosaic, Forest Ethics and School of the Americas Watch. Alario architected the communications track of Liberty Hill Foundation’s Wally Marks Leadership Institute, and offered workshops for grantees of McKenzie River Gathering Foundation in Oregon. She’s offered trainings at numerous conferences including Western States Center’s AMP Conference, Energy Action Coalition’s PowerShift, Netroots Nation and the Craigslist Nonprofit Boot Camp. In addition to her consulting practice, Alario is a member of three activist training networks: Beautiful Trouble, Center for Story Based Strategy and the Ruckus Society.
Alario serves on the Board of the Center for Story-Based Strategy, and on the Advisory Boards of IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against the War) and The Kindle Project. She alternatively chases her poodle across the majestic red rock landscapes of Moab, Utah and the effervescent coastlines of Santa Barbara, California. Find her on Instagram and Twitter @celiaalario.
Celia Alario has also worked as a journalist and producer. She was a field producer on Michael Moore’s Emmy-nominated television show “The Awful Truth” and produced and hosted news programming at Pacifica Radio’s KPFA in Berkeley, California and KZMU in Moab, Utah. She has served as an Engagement Producer, designing outreach campaigns for a number of award-winning documentaries and television programs, including Firestorm, On Coal River, Sir! No Sir!, The Greater Good, Bowling for Columbine, Trade Off and Building Green.
