Iris Holzer is joining the UCSB Environmental Studies Program as an Assistant Teaching Professor specializing in Soils and Environmental Chemistry. She is excited to teach two soil science classes in 2024, Principles of Soil Science and Soils of California: Formation, Morphology, and Management. Her research focuses on rock weathering in the soils of agricultural and natural systems with a particular emphasis on the study of enhanced rock weathering for carbon removal, including recent work with CarbonPlan. Committed to fostering equitable access to science and the outdoors, Iris was recognized in 2022 with the UC Davis Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research. Iris studied geochemistry at Scripps College as an undergraduate before attending UC Davis for her Ph.D. in Soils & Biogeochemistry. She looks forward to teaching and learning with students in the diverse landscapes of the Central Coast.
