What is the Measurement?
The value of agriculture in Santa Barbara County is a very important element in maintaining economic health. By analyzing the total value of crops through calculating the acreage, yield, and value of Santa Barbara County agricultural products through a voluntary survey sent to farmers, as well as earnings and total farm employment (note: earnings and farm employment are not included in this data set), the integrity of farming and it's vital role can be understood.
Why is it Important?
The economic gain is apparent, but the environmental advantages cannot be overlooked. By understanding the importance of agriculture, the need to preserve and maintain these lands becomes clearer. The overall environmental gains include preserving ecosystems and species intertwined with agricultural lands, especially if farming practices are managed properly in ways such as organic farming, as well as curbing urban sprawl. If farmers are doing financially well, they can afford to offer more jobs, increasing employment. They can also risk going organic, which saves money by stopping pesticide and synthetic fertilizer use, yet needs more labor.
How are we doing?
As shown in the Santa Barbara County Agricultural Crop Reports (1983-2000), the total crop value since 1983 has more than doubled! From 1999 to 2000 alone, crop value increased over $81 million! This indicates improvement of farming techniques, along with increased efficiency of land use.
