*Mary
Lou Days is a long time community historian who can speak with first
hand knowledge about the "conservation' and "preservation"
work of Pearl Chase and many others in the years before the spill.
She is currently a member of the board of the Santa Barbara Trust
for Historic Preservation.
Jim
Mills is one of the "naturalists" (his term) who fought
against the Forest Service plans to put roads into much of the Los
Padres Forest backcountry and who did so by getting approval for
the creation of the San Rafael Wilderness area, the first or one
of the first established under the 1965 Wilderness Act.
Bob
Sollen was a reporter with the Santa Barbara News-Press for a few
years prior to and for years after the 1969 blowout. While he is
generally associated with post-blowout history, he has a good understanding
of the pre-blowout community conservation and preservation effort
Marc
McGinnes is an environmental lawyer, leader and educator; one of
the founders and long-time stalwarts of the Environmental Studies
Program at UCSB, he developed and taught ten courses in Environmental
Studies Program, 1971-2005.
**Selma
Rubin is a long-time community leader. Among her other roles, she
served as founding director of Santa Barbara Citizens for Environmental
Defense (1969), the Community Environmental Council (1970) and the
Environmental Defense Center (1977). Still active today, she is
a recipient of UCSB Environmental Studies Outstanding Community
Service Award.
Paul
Relis was a student at UCSB at the time of 1969 blowout. Since then,
he has served as the Executive Director of Community Environmental
Council (1970-1990) and a member of the California Integrated Waste
Management Board (1990-1997). He now serves as Executive Vice President
for CR&R, Inc., a major Southern California waste management
and resources recovery firm..
