ES Academic Advising
Services
Many sources of academic advising are available to students at UCSB.
Each college provides advice to its students on matters such as major selection,
program planning, academic difficulties, degree requirements, and petitions
for exceptions to requirements. Undergraduate and graduate advisors are available
in each major department to assist with decisions about majors, careers, and
graduate schools.
The Environmental Studies Program offers a number of resources to assist students
majoring in either Environmental Studies or Hydrologic Sciences:

Environmental
Studies Advising - People:
Student Peer Advisors
- Two junior or senior Environmental Studies or Hydrologic Science students
are available for drop-in advising approximately 15 to 20 hours per week.

Academic Advisor and Internship Coordinator
- A Full-time staff member is available to assist students with: planning
their academic schedules, answering questions about degree requirements,
counseling on graduate school and career opportunities, and coordinating
the ES Program's academic internship program and field studies opportunities
- Available for drop-in advising Mon.-Thur. from 8:00-12:00 and 1:00-5:00.
A specific day and time to meet may be arranged by scheduling an appointment
at least two days in advance by calling 893-3185 or via e-mail.
- Although the ES faculty's primary role is to teach courses, they also
serve as an invaluable depository of information for students seeking advice
on topics such as; cutting edge research opportunities within their field
of study, trends within the environmental job market, and information on
graduate schools - especially the ones they attended.
- Getting to know your faculty can also prove useful when it comes time
to obtain letters of recommendation for graduate school or when applying
for a job.
- Environmental Studies faculty are available to meet with students during
their posted office hours or by appointment. Visit the ES

Main Office Staff
- The Environmental Studies office staff are available M-F from 8:00-12:00
and 1:00-4:00. They can help students locate a specific faculty member,
find out if and when a ES course will be offered, and provide students with
information about the ES Program and its curriculum.

ES Student Study Lounge/Computer Room (ES Conference
Room, Bren 4316)
- Open student study lounge, M-F, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (room is occasionally
closed to students when reserved for an ES meeting).
- 10 to 12 Macintosh and PC computer stations with Internet access, word
processing, and cheap ($.05/page) laser printing capabilities.
- Environmental Studies Library with a large selection of donated books
and periodicals which students may browse and check out for up to two weeks.
- Large conference table for group study sessions and two couches for reading
and relazing between classes.

- The College of Letters and Science Advising Office can help students
with: planning your General Education program, understanding requirements,
policies, and procedures, assessing your progress to degree, obtaining and
submitting petitions, and evaluating all of your academic options, including:
choice of major; the College Honors Program; research and awards; and preparing

- The College of Letters and Science Honors Program offers a setting
in which extremely motivated students can pursue their interests as part
of a small community of scholars. The program connects students to the resources
of a large university but also provides an intimate collegiate atmosphere
where they can work closely with peers and professor in small classes, research

- The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) program
in the College of Letters and Science was initiated to promote the scholarly
work of undergraduate students and to provide resources for undergraduates
to pursue independent research and creative activities under the guidance

- Undergraduate Career Services offers career workshops, career assessment,

Campus Learning Assistance Services (Bldg. 477)
CLAS offers a wide range of tutorial and academic skills programs
designed to assist students in attaining mastery of their university course
material. In addition, CLAS has a staff of dedicated professional learning skills
counselors with years of experience guiding students through the intricacies
of subjects and skills as varied as calculus, organic chemistry, time management,

Education Abroad Program (2431 South Hall)
Your academic link to studying around the world. Students in
the University of California are fortunate to have available to them the premier
study abroad program in the country. UC's Education Abroad Program has 247 programs
in 150 universities worldwide, in 35 countries on six continents. EAP enables
students to spend some period of their academic career -- a year, a semester,
a quarter or summer term --studying abroad. While abroad they remain fully enrolled

Instructional Computing (1523 Phelps Hall)
Instructional Computing is UCSB's undergraduate computing
facility. IC offers a wide variety of services for students. Our primary goal
is to provide instructional facilities for classes. In addition, we provide
a number of services specifically for students. U-Mail, a division of IC, manages
university email for undergraduate UCSB students. Every quarter IC provides
free software workshops on the most used applications. The IC staff also maintains
the Software Help Guide, an online resource for the applications available in
