Have you ever wondered how someone turns an idea into a great project? What it takes to lead a team? How to inspire and motivate a group of people? Then this is the program for you. The Environmental Leadership Incubator (ELI) is designed to mentor UCSB undergraduates through the leadership process, from the conception of an idea through to its implementation. The program will train you in the leadership and project management skills needed to address looming environmental challenges. Along the way, you will develop self-awareness and an understanding of your own leadership journey and style.
The Environmental Leadership Incubator welcomes sophomores and juniors with an environmental project idea from any undergraduate major on campus. The incubator starts with a 4-unit, seminar-style, fall quarter course (ENVS 195) that will meet once a week for three hours. Each seminar session will be dedicated to a particular environmental leadership skill, including pitching an idea, networking, conflict resolution, etc. Students enrolled in the course will practice and develop these skills by working on environmental leadership projects through the quarter. Winter and spring quarters students then work independently, with the support of the ELI coordinator and an advisory team to implement their project ideas. All project teams present their progress at the ELI capstone event at the end of spring quarter. Projects may focus at the campus, community or national levels and can be aimed at social, technical and/or policy change. All project ideas are welcome!
